Bell Heather - A common moorland plant in The Dark Peak

Peak District Information

The Peak District boasts some of the most stunning and diverse scenery in England!

It is possible to walk in this wonderful area many times and for each adventure to be unique.  Not only can you enjoy contrasting landscapes of the two very distinctive areas of The Dark Peak and The White Peak, but their appearance changes throughout the year.  There is no 'best time' to come to the Peak District.  Each season brings new delights and fresh experiences.

At Peak Walking Adventures, we focus our group walks in three distinctive areas of the Peak District:

The Dark Peak

The Dark Peak is the gritstone area of the Peak District, characterised by its distinctive gritstone edges, high heather covered moorland, and rounded hills.

The highest hills of the Peak District are located in the Dark Peak giving the opportunity for some wonderfully challenging walks over rough and rugged terrain with stunning views.  If you prefer easier walking, then there are some scenic walks along the valleys and around reservoirs.

The White Peak

This is in the central area of the Peak District and is the limestone area.  Typical features of White Peak landscapes include gently rolling countryside, small fields bounded by dry-stone wall, and deep limestone gorges.

The hills of the White Peak may not be as high as in the neighbouring Dark Peak, but offer amazing beauty and challenging walks.  Alternatively there are some lovely easier walks in the dales.

The Derbyshire Dales

The Derbyshire Dales area lies south of the Dark Peak, and part of it is outside the Peak District National Park.  The scenery is still beautiful though and there is the added interest of the Derwent Valley World Heritage Site.

Walking in the Derbyshire Dale is often overlooked in favour the rest of the Peak District.  We can't understand why!  Let us help you to discover the wonderful area.
