Guided Walk to Bleaklow's Higher Shelf Stones and Superfortress Crash Site

Bleaklow is a vast moorland in the northern Derbyshire Peak District, known for its rugged beauty.

Characterized by its peat moors, wide-open views, and dramatic gritstone  escarpments Bleaklow offers an unforgettable experience for walkers with a number of routes on stony paths and moorland tracks, including the famous Pennine Way.

From the exposed summit of Higher Shelf Stones, you can enjoy panoramic views stretching across the Peak District, Manchester and Cheshire Planes, taking in the Lancashire and Snowdonia hills on a fine day, making it one of the most scenic spots in the area.

The Higher Shelf Stones Crash Site

The Higher Shelf Stones crash site is a significant historical landmark on Bleaklow. On November 3, 1948, a US Air Force B-29 Superfortress crashed, resulting in the tragic loss of all 13 crew members.

Today, remnants of the aircraft can still be seen, alongside a small memorial to those who lost their lives.

Guided Walks on Bleaklow

Experience the unique combination of history and nature on our 16km/10 mile guided walk from Glossop to Higher Shelf Stones and the Bleaklow crash site. Our route climbs to over 600m / 2000ft and mostly takes quieter paths.

We also visit Bleaklow Head Summit, via the Pennine Way, before descending across wild moorland to Dog Rock and Dowstone Clough.  Here, there’s  an impressive high-escarpment path above Yellowslacks Brook 150ft below, following a less- frequented route back down to Glossop.
