Kinder Scout Walks

Kinder Scout, located in the Dark Peak area of the Peak District National Park, is the highest point in the Park, standing at 2,087ft/636m above sea level. Covering an area of approximately five square miles /8 square km, this iconic plateau boasts a rugged and wild landscape, characterised by precious peat moorland, gritstone edges, rocky outcrops and deep cloughs with tumbling waterfalls.

Guided Walks on Kinder

We enjoy introducing Peak District visitors to Kinder Scout on regular walks around and across the Plateau.  Many start from the pretty village of Edale.  It’s where the Pennine Way begins, a long distance footpath which traverses Kinder’s western edge on its 268 mile / 461km journey to the Scottish border.

Kinder highlights

Here are some Kinder highlights, often included on our walks:

  • Grindsrook Clough: There’s a rocky path along the stream bed of this deep, pretty and popular clough – it emerges onto a rugged escarpment at over 2000ft/600m with a fine viewpoint over the Vale of Edale from Grindsbrook Knoll.

  • Extraordinary ice and wind carved rock formations: The Woolpacks, Ringing Roger, Madwomen Stones and the Boxing Gloves are just few names attributed to a collection of naturally sculptured rocks scattered close to the Plateau’s edge.

  • The Mass Trespass: This historical path climbs alongside the tumbling stream of William Clough. In 1932, 500 walkers followed this route from Hayfield to protest, and secure access rights to open country. A walk extension passes Kinder Downfall, the tallest waterfall in the Peak District, with fabulous views towards the tiny tarn, Mermaid’s Pool, and Kinder Reservoir far below.

  • Kinder Challenge Walks: Our Kinder Circuit and Snake Challenge walks  take in the Plateau’s quiet northern edge with lovely views over Snake Pass towards Alport Valley and Bleaklow Hill.  Or there’s the Edale Skyline Challenge which follows Kinder’s southern edge on it’s 21 mile, high level route around the Vale of Edale.

  • Kinder Plateau: Sometimes we explore the rugged, peat moorland on Kinder’s interior plateau – enjoying the wild flowers, mountain hares, and the curlews and skylarks calling in Spring.
