Ladybower and Derwent Edge Guided Walks

Enjoy a guided walk in the breathtaking landscape of Ladybower Reservoir and Derwent Edge in the heart of Derbyshire’s Peak District. This stunning area offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, rich history, and outdoor adventure.

Ladybower Reservoir and Derwent Edge - Key Features

  • Ladybower Reservoir, completed in 1945, is the largest of three reservoirs in the Upper Derwent Valley. This engineering marvel, along with the Derwent and Howden reservoirs, was built to supply water to the growing urban populations of the East Midlands and South Yorkshire.
  • The construction of Ladybower required the flooding of two villages, Derwent and Ashopton. Today, if water levels are very low, you can sometimes glimpse the remnants of Derwent Village.
  • During World War II, Ladybower Reservoir played a crucial role in England’s history. It was here that the famous 617 Squadron, known as the ‘Dambusters’, practiced their low-level flying techniques. Pilots used the reservoir’s dam to prepare for their mission to breach the German dams, a pivotal operation in the war effort.
  • Derwent Edge is renowned for its dramatic rock formations and sweeping views. The gritstone escarpment offers a unique landscape shaped by millennia of natural forces. Key rock formations include the iconic ‘Salt Cellar’ and ‘Wheel Stones’. The edge provides a habitat for diverse wildlife and fauna.
