‘Mountain Queen’, Lhakpa Sherpa, Joins us on Bamford Edge to Promote Everest Film

Bamford Edge Lhakpa Sherpa Peak District

Record-breaking Nepali mountaineer, Lhakpa Sherpa and her daughters joined us on the Peak District’s Bamford Edge recently...

It was a guided press walk with award-winning film director, Lucy Walker, and The Guardian, to discuss the climber’s new film, Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa, being released in cinemas and on Netflix in July.

The film follows Lhakpa Sherpa’s ten ascents of Everest, the most ascents of the world’s highest mountain achieved by any woman.  In 2023, she also summited K2, the second highest peak.

Born in the Makalu area of Nepal and one of eleven children, Lhakpa was determined to climb and guide from an early age, and became the first Nepali woman to summit Everest in September 2000.  In 2016, she was named one of the BBC’s Top 100 Women.

A single mother with two daughters and a son, Lhakpa Sherpa lives in Connecticut and works as a cleaner when she’s not in the mountains.  Alongside the climbing, Mountain Queen, illuminates a deeply personal story that involved an abusive relationship, a struggle for climbing sponsorship, and her unshakable resolve to support her children and other women to achieve.

It’s a moving and inspirational journey.
