Walk Difficulty

Below is a guide to the ease and difficulty of the walks we offer – to help you think about the best hike for you.

The level of challenge is higher than lowland or valley walks and can be affected significantly by the weather, your personal fitness and the ability and those you walk with. The information below is an approximate guide only. During all our walks and courses, we are committed to considering the safety of the whole group.  We will undertake continuous risk assessment throughout the day and may take the decision to change or modify walking plans at short notice.

Accessible Walks

Total Distance: 2.5km (plus) or 1 mile (plus).

Total Ascent:  25–150 metres or 80–500 feet.

Description: The route will be wheelchair and/or scooter accessible.  Or walking on tracks with less trip hazards and gentler slopes, avoiding narrow styles, or styles that have to be climbed over.  Total distances and related difficulty are not shown as the walks are tailored to your individual requirements – please contact us  to discuss your wishes.

Easier Walks

Total Distance: 2.5–13km (plus) or 1–8 miles.

Total Ascent:  150m–300 metres or 500–1000 feet.

Description: These walks are great for those who are new to the hills, hiking with a young family, or a little apprehensive about distance, height and terrain. Or you may simply wish to ‘Chill on the Hill’ at a leisurely pace! Occasionally, terrain may be a little rocky or steep in places, and boggy if it’s wet.

Moderate Walks

Total Distance: 13–23km (plus) or 8–14 miles.

Total Ascent:  300m–600 metres or 1000–2000 feet.

Description:  Whether you are seasoned hill walker or new to the hills, you can enjoy these walks if you are fit enough to walk all day with breaks (5 – 8 hours).  You’ll be happy tackling terrain that may be rocky or steep in places, and boggy if it’s wet.

These walks are graded ‘Moderate’ because distance and / or ascent will be longer and higher than our ‘Easier’ Walks.

Harder Walks

Total Distance: 13–23km (plus) or 8–14 miles.

Total Ascent:  600m–900 metres or 2000–3000 feet.

Great for seasoned walkers or walkers who are fit and happy to  tackle more ascent and / or distance.  Terrain will  be rocky or steep in places, and boggy if it’s wet.

These walks are graded ‘Harder’ because distance and / or ascent will be longer and higher than on our ‘Moderate’ Walks.

Tough! Walks

Total Distance: 13–40km (plus) or 8–14 miles.

Total Ascent:  900m–1800 metres or 3000–6000 feet.

Description:  Good for more experienced hill walkers who are happy to walk 8-10 hours (or more) with short breaks on terrain that will  be rocky,  steep, and boggy if it’s wet.  Distances and / or ascent will be significant.

These walks are graded ‘Tough!’ because distance and / or ascent will be longer and higher than our ‘Harder’ Walks.  Occasionally, the route may have a section where a ‘head for heights’ is required because the slope is steeper, or an edge is closer, or a ridge is narrower than on our other walks. Given the varied nature of these ‘Tough!’ walks please contact us if you wish to discuss the route and the challenges involved before you book.

Please Note: Accessible Walks, Corporate Walks and Private Guided Walks are tailored to individual, or group requirements and the level of difficulty can be agreed at the time of booking.
