Walking Amongst the Pennines

High Cup Nick North Pennines

For the past four summers, we have spent wonderful weekends exploring in and around the Pennines, journeying through the Yorkshire Dales, the Howgill Fells and the Northern Pennines. From Settle to Appleby-in-Westmorland, we covered 100 miles around England’s central spine over eight glorious walking days.

Train to Trek

None of this would have been possible without the remarkable Settle–Carlisle Railway, which provided the perfect transport link for many of our linear walks and once again demonstrated the value of sustainable travel in some of England’s finest landscapes.

Everyone who joined us will have their own memorable moments, but here are a few of ours….

2023 – Yorkshire Dales

Walks

  • Day 1: Ribblehead to Settle Station via Ingleborough, the Dales Way and Moughton Scar
  • Day 2: Malham Cove, Malham Tarn and Gordale Scar

Memorable Places

  • Lunch at Moughton Scar, a vast limestone pavement overlooking Crummack Dale
  • Walking above Gordale Scar, a deep cleft cut by glacial meltwater

2024 – Dentdale, Whernside and Swaledale

Walks

  • Day 1: Dent Station to Ribblehead via Dentdale, Whernside and Ribblehead
  • Day 2: Muker, Swinner Gill, Gunnerside Gill and Swaledale

Memorable Places

  • Above Swaledale, exploring waterfalls, mining history and flower-rich landscapes in Swinner and Gunnerside Gills

2025 – Wild Boar Fell and the Howgills

Walks

  • Day 1: Garsdale Station to Kirkby Stephen Station via Wild Boar Fell
  • Day 2: Sedbergh, the Howgills and Cautley Spout

Memorable Places

  • Standing at the stone pillars on Wild Boar Fell, gazing over the valley to Mallerstang Edge
  • At the edge of Cautley Spout – England’s highest cascade waterfall

2026 – Northern Pennines

Walks

  • Day 1: Appleby (Dufton), High Cup Nick and Maize Beck
  • Day 2: Upper Teesdale, Cow Green Reservoir and the River Tees

Memorable Places

  • The fine symmetry of High Cup Nick’s glacial valley, and a secret remote lunch spot on the banks of Maize Beck
  • Wild birds, insects and flowers on the beautiful Upper Tees, followed by a short scramble alongside the boiling cascade at Cauldron Snout

Ever-changing Landscapes

These walks were a journey through ever-changing landscapes, becoming progressively wilder and more remote as we travelled north. It was fitting that our final day in Upper Teesdale was a riot of wildlife and wildflowers: curlews, skylarks, lapwings, bees, pansies, rare gentians and orchids all thriving in this extraordinary landscape.

Looking Forward

Thank you to our wonderful clients and guides. It has been a privilege to share these adventures together, whether in rain, mist, wind or glorious sunshine.

Ian and Claire joined us for all four weekends.  As Claire said:   “So many special sights – I wish we were doing it all again.”

And the good news is that we are.

This September, we will continue our northern adventures, starting with Ingleborough, and they’ll be more adventures in the area next year
