Description
Step into Derbyshire’s history with our Eyam Walking Tour and Plague Picnic – an unforgettable journey through one of England’s most remarkable villages which culminates in a plague picnic that replicates the 17th century ingredients which kept villagers alive during their lockdown.
Once a thriving lead mining community, Eyam was transformed in 1665 when the plague struck, and its incredible story of courage and resilience emerged.
During a single devastating year, Eyam lost more than 260 villagers. Their story is now widely recognised as an enduring testament to self-sacrifice and compassion.
Join our expertly guided walk to visit Eyam’s most significant sites. Uncover gripping tales of individual villagers, and learn how the plague swept through this tiny community. Your guide will reveal the grisly details and enduring lessons of a village united in the face of tragedy.
Highlights of the tour include:
- Cottages where the plague first took hold
- Meeting a 9th generation relative from a family living during the Plague
- Cucklet Delf—site of outdoor church used to halt the spread
- The historic village stocks
- The poignant Riley Graves, where one mother buried her husband and six of her children in a week
- The village herbalist’s tomb
The Boundary stone where the supplies from the outside world were left
- A ticket to Eyam Museum to learn more about this incredible story
- A 1666 ‘Plague Picnic’! (with vegan and vegetarian options available)
Discover how Eyam’s extraordinary response to the plague influenced modern strategies for disease control – including the ‘lockdowns’ experienced during the recent Covid pandemic.
This isn’t just a walk; it’s a compelling adventure that brings history to life.

Respect, Protect and Enjoy!
We all want to respect, protect and enjoy the fragile upland environments where we walk, so that they can be enjoyed by generations to come. Following The Countryside Code really helps…
Respect:
- Be considerate to those living in, working in and enjoying the countryside
- Leave gates and property as you find them
- Do not block access to gateways or driveways when parking
- Be nice, say hello, share the space
- Follow local signs and keep to marked paths unless wider access is available
Protect:
- Take your litter home – leave no trace of your visit
- Do not light fires and only have BBQs where signs say you can
- Always keep dogs under control and in sight
- Dog poo – bag it and bin it – any public waste bin will do
- Care for nature – do not cause damage or disturbance
Enjoy:
- Check your route and local conditions
- Plan your adventure – know what to expect and what you can do
- Enjoy your visit, have fun, make a memory
