Description

Saturday 12 September 2026 – Ingleborough amd Moughton Scar.

The Route:  This linear ‘railway’ walk has masses of variety, beginning with a short, beautiful train ride from Horton in Ribblesdale Station up to Ribblehead.  We walk from the station, not far from the the colossal 24-arch, Ribblehead Viaduct which spans 300 metres across open moorland between Yorkshire’s highest peaks. Soon we’re ascending high up onto our summit, Ingleborough, at 724m/2375ft.  In fine weather there are dramatic views across the peaks of  Whernside, Pen y Ghent and towards the Cumbrian Fells – the hardest part is done!  The route descends on the Dales Wale, passing Moughton Scar, with its stunning edges limestone pavement over looking Crummack Dale below, before dropping back into Horton in Ribblesdale.

  • Distance: 11 miles/17km.
  • Ascent: 2,000ft/600m.
  • Difficulty – Harder.  Moderate Pace.

Sunday 13 September 2026  – Malham Cove, Gordale Scar and Janet’s Foss.

The Route: This walk packs in the scenery and amazing geological structures shaped by glacial erosion and tumbling water.  From Malham, a popular but charming village, we follow the beck to the impressive Malham Cove; this huge, curved limestone structure was shaped by waterfalls carrying glacial meltwater.  Climbing up above the Cove we then reach an impressive limestone pavement stretching across the high landscape, before passing Ing Scar with its views over the valley below.  We reach the shores of Malham Tarn, a nature reserve with abundant bird life, We pass around Great Close Hill with views over the tarn, before descending along the edge of Gordale Scar.  This is a deep gorge gouged out from a succession of ice ages  – it is a geological wonder with an option to visit the gorge.  On our return to the village we pass beautiful Janet’s Foss with its waterfall and pool – perhaps a good spot to dip our feet before we finish the day.

  • Distance: 10 miles/15.5km.
  • Ascent: 1165ft/355m.
  • Difficulty – Moderate.  Moderate Pace.

Please note:  On both days, to maximise your enjoyment and safety, it’s possible we may have to alter routes or swop them around according to weather conditions and party ability. Or, in the event that trains are not running.  Alternative routes will be in the same area.
