Walking Lightly: Making Our Adventures More Sustainable

West End Moss Black Hill Heather Peak District

At Peak Walking Adventures, getting outdoors isn’t just about fresh air and breathtaking views. It’s also about protecting landscapes and supporting communities…

Fostering Connections

In 2023, we were proud to receive the Peak District Environmental Quality Mark (PDEQM ) > , recognising our work to care for the environment, support local businesses, and give back to communities.

And for us, that was just the start.

Our Way of Walking Lightly

Every step we take matters. Here’s how we make our adventures responsible and sustainable:

  • Restoring Landscapes – volunteering with Moors for the Future Partnership > to conserve moorlands.
  • Cutting Carbon – offering free car lifts from train and bus stations.
  • Guided Walks: Keeping It Small – low-impact walks in intimate groups.
  • Corporate Walks: Managing Numbers – maximum 40 participants, splitting larger groups across routes.
  • Sharing Stories – bringing local wildlife, geology, and history to life.
  • Backing Local – recommending independent cafés, restaurants, shops, and accommodation.
  • Reducing Waste – running admin online and recycling wherever possible.

And it’s not just us — every walker who joins in becomes part of this shared effort.

Inclusion Matters

It’s really important to us that we are inclusive, accessible and welcoming for all people. Aligned with our PDEQM recognition, we support underrepresented communities and those with less experience of walking in the hills. Recent examples include:

  • Partnering with refugee charity Gulab Sorkh Foundation > to guide a group of Afghan women, walking at Ladybower Reservoir. One participant said: “I never experienced such a good day in the UK. I will never forget this memory.”
  • Offering welcoming spaces for novice walkers. A 2025 survey respondent commented: “I felt really accepted and welcome…your willingness to accommodate slower walkers, and your collection from train stations, makes a massive difference in making these places more accessible.”
  • Offered advice and guidance to individuals and groups about accessible journeys on trails and around the shores of local reservoirs.

We are also updating our website and social media with more inclusive photography to better reach more diverse audiences.

Giving Back Through Charity

Even as a small business, we aim to make a big difference. Each year, we choose charity partners that reflect our values:

Over the years, Peak Walking Adventures has also supported the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, Derbyshire Mind, and the International Porter Protection Group — all working to make the outdoors and local communities safer, more inclusive, and better protected.

Fundraising Highlights: 2024–2025

Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve achieved so far:

  • 2024–2025 Winter ‘Ethel Walks’: These walks, kindly supported by our clients, raised £400 for Moors for the Future Partnership > – Peak Walking Adventures made an additional donation of £558 in December 2025.
